Getting started
Installation
Install notagent with Homebrew on Apple Silicon, keep it updated, or build the binary from source.
Homebrew
The initial Homebrew release supports Apple Silicon Macs:
brew install --cask notagentdev/tap/notagent
Updating
brew upgrade notagent
notagent checks notagent.dev for new versions in the background and shows this command when an update is available. It never runs Homebrew or replaces its own executable.
Building from source
The required Rust toolchain is pinned by the repository, so rustup picks it up on the first build:
cargo build --release
The binary is target/release/notagent. Run the complete project gate with scripts/check.sh: it formats, runs clippy with warnings denied, and executes the whole workspace’s tests.
First start
notagent
Everything else happens inside the TUI. Start with /login to pick a provider and store an API key or run an OAuth flow, then /model to choose a model. Providers are also picked up from ambient environment variables such as ANTHROPIC_API_KEY or OPENAI_API_KEY without a login.
